Located in the beautiful northern central foothills of the Sierra Nevada's, Angels Camp has a rich history of mining, caverns and art. It was founded by George Angel, a member of the Carson Party who had come to Calaveras County in search of gold. By 1885 Angels Camp had become one of the most prominent mining cities in California with the discovery of veins of gold ore in quartz and other rock formations.
The town was made even more famous when Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, wrote his story The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. To this day, the Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frogs Jubilee takes place every year during the third weekend in May.
Mark Twain's presence cam still be felt throughout the county.
